Applying our homemade board butter
Spruce Moose board butter consists of 100% food safe ingredients - a mix of bees wax and mineral oil. The wax serves as a surface protectant against stains and liquids, while the mineral oil will penetrate into the wood fibers.
Board should be conditioned once per month, or more frequently if used heavily for cutting
Use a clean lint-free rag or bare hands to apply a generous amount
Apply generously using motions similar to applying wax to a car. Think about trying to work the butter deep into the grains.
Apply equally to all sides, edges, and handle (if applicable) – be sure to really work it in to the end grain (the ends of the board)
Let sit overnight ON EDGE and then wipe any excess with paper towel
Use common mineral oil as an alternative to the board conditioner - apply generously, let sit overnight, and then wipe off any excess oil that was not soaked up
Never use a cooking oil, like vegetable or olive oil to treat a cutting board - these can go rancid over time. Similarly, never use any cleaning solution other than regular dish soap.

General board care
Hand wash only with warm water and soap under faucet
Wash equally on both sides (even if only one side needs it). Towel dry, and store vertically on edge as it air dries
Never lay a wet board flat to dry - it will warp
Do not use as a trivet- avoid placing hot items like pots and pans on this board (direct contact to warm food is OK)
Store the board on it’s edge whenever possible - wet or not (leaning up against something is ok as long as both faces are exposed to air)
To treat stains or smells (IE, onion), spot treat with lemon juice or white vinegar - the acidity will neutralize
